EXTRA SAUSAGE FOR BREAKFAST

Special requirements need special solutions.

Clinics and hospitals are complex systems that have to run smoothly. Especially in health facilities, food logistics present a huge challenge that demands clever solutions.

At the LKH Innsbruck hospital, three meals a day have to be provided to up to 1,500 patients. The food served to patients must be fresh and delicious and arrive in accordance with the highest hygiene standards.

The LKH has supply tunnels that connect all buildings on the hospital premises. The tunnels are used to distribute all goods, thus ensuring safe transport routes and a calmer environment with less traffic above ground.

All food is distributed to the various buildings using the underground supply tunnels. From there, it is sent to the different wards and then served to patients. Breakfast is a particular challenge at the hospital since ingredients have to transported in E2 boxes.

In order to guarantee maximum hygiene and preserve food quality, closed transport trolleys are needed to store the E2 boxes and maintain the temperature of the food until it is served. The trolleys should also have a draw bar to enable their connection to each other and a towing vehicle, which pulls them through the tunnel at a speed of 8 km/h. This is not something offered as standard.

The solution was a modification of the B.PRO TTW tray transport trolley: the ledge walls were adapted especially to accommodate the E2 boxes and modifications were also made to the doors. Draw bars were designed and integrated.

Today, twenty TTW breakfast trolleys with a load capacity of 200 E2 boxes are used every day to transport food through the LKH Innsbruck supply tunnels, thus providing a fresh and healthy start to the day for both patients and staff.
