Recycling on its own isn't enough!
Reuse as the way forward: modest recycling rate mean this is an important step for the environment.
If you believe the media figures, Germany is the world champion at recycling. This means that no other country in the world feeds more refuse into the recycling circuit than Germany. This is respectable, but unfortunately it's still not nearly enough.
The amount of plastic packaging recycled in Germany is between 15.6 and nearly 50%, depending on which institute, ministry or organisation publish the figure. The remaining packaging refuse ends up in the residual waste or is exported to South or Southeast Asia, where much of it finds its way into the ocean.
There's only one option for countering packaging refuse, and this no-alternative system is called "reuse"!
No packaging is the best packaging!
The EU-wide prohibition against single-use plastic for disposable tableware took effect in July of 2021. As from 2023, caterers, delivery services and restaurants will also be required to offer reusable containers as an alternative to single-use containers for food and beverage takeaway and delivery. In future, consumers will have a choice between single-use takeaway packaging and reusable packaging. This was decreed by the German federal cabinet with an amendment to German packaging law.
This change doesn't prohibit single-use packaging, but at least it will enable consumers to decide for themselves which alternative they choose. Reusable versions can't be more expensive than food and beverages sold in single-use packaging. Reusable cups also have to be available for every size offered.
